The Camino del Rey

Here at KIWII we understand that buying a property is not only investing in a new home in the sunshine but also choosing a great lifestyle option perfect for you and your loved ones. We will run a series of blogs based on activities and interests all within easy reach from your new home.

The 'Camino del Rey' is fast becoming a fantastic tourist attraction for all the family (over 8 years of age only). This hike is one of our family favourites due to the breathtaking landscape and daring heights you experience as walking along the footpath at a maximum of 100m high above the river below!

The history dates back to 1901 when a path was built through the Gaitanes Gorge connecting the 2 hydroelectrical stations on either side. To inaugurate this incredible work King Alfonso XIII walked the path in 1921 hence the name 'Camino del Rey' (Walk of the King).

More recently the path has been completely renovated in 2015 and now is thankfully a much safer but equally as beautiful walk for everyone to enjoy ! As you walk the path the old pathway can be seen underneath which highlights the true bravery of all workers that used the path to transport goods between one hydroelectric plant and the other.

Due to the popularity of this walk booking ahead is essential and you can choose either a guided tour or an unguided tour. Personally I always have chosen an unguided tour as its lovely to walk at your own pace and stop at will. Take a picnic and find a lovely spot in the sunshine to enjoy the views.

Top Tips: The Camino del Rey is a '1 way only' walk. A bus is available by the train station in El Chorro to the start point of the walk. The bus is 1.50€pp but allows you to easily walk back to your car once the walk is completed.

You can book an entry ticket on this website www.caminitodelrey.info

From the closest point accessible by car or bus it is still a good 30-minute walk (3km) to the start of the Camino del Rey. Each ticket has a specific start time so allow yourself plenty of time to reach the start point. (we've ended up doing a 1km sprint on many occasions!

La Garganta, once a flour mill is a beautiful hotel with a fantastic restaurant boasting incredible views of the spectacular surrounding countryside Their terrace is an perfect way to finish the walk and enjoy a drink and tapas. If you are looking to stay overnight this is also highly recommended. The restaurant is exceptional and there are plenty more hikes and adventures to be had at El Chorro lakes!
