PLACES & WONDERS

We are proud of the diversity of culture and opportunity in our surrounding communities. We are celebrating with a guide to our time honoured favourites and descriptions and wonders of the places we call home.

DUQUESA The Hidden Gem of the Costa del Sol

The Castle in Castillo next to Duquesa Port was built in 1767 by Francisco Paulino during the reign of Carlos III.  The fortress is situated next to La Duquesa beach, alongside Duquesa Marina and the coastal town of Sabinillas and It is one of the best examples of an 18th century fort.  Until relatively recently, the castle was used as the headquarters of the local police and civil guard. Its architectural and historical importance ensure that it is frequent port of call for visitors. The fortress was built using a series of walls barely a metre high left behind by the Romans. The castle housed cavalry and infantry detachments, as well as a straw loft, kitchen and chapel. It is now used to stage a number of cultural and recreational events, as well as displaying a number of archaeological exhibits discovered in the area. You can even get married there.

The port of Duquesa was newly constructed and purpose built in the early 1980´s next door to Castillo, and is largely considered one of the prettiest ports on the Costa de Sol. La Duquesa is the most westerly port in the province of Málaga.

The port itself sits around three sides, with a marina that berths 328 boats & yachts of a myriad of design up to 20metres, and offers full Marina services for boating enthusiasts. a number of companies offer Jet Boat, Wake Board, Boat trips and Scuba Diving.

The port is home to many different restaurants and bars with all tastes catered for.

The property in the area largely built up from the port in the early 2000´s and led upwards on the hill of El Hacho. Here you will find some of the most popular resorts, Marina Real, Mykonos, Marina de la Duquesa, Los castillos, Monte Duquesa, Duquesa Suites, Duquesa Village, Duquesa Regent and Fuentes de la Duquesa.

There are older properties in the area, mainly found on the hillsides to the west of the port, Los Hidalgos, Princesa Krsitina and Hacienda Guadalupe.

Duquesa and the surrounding areas are one of the areas with the highest concentration of golf courses in the world. There are diverse activities on your doorstep and with the integration of cultures of other civilisations that lived on these coasts lots to be discovered. You will be able to visit the Torre del Salto de la Mora tower, a bastion of the Muslim era; enjoy sulfur baths of Roman origins such as the Baños de la Hedionda, or explore wine due to the area’s tradition of vineyards and wine-making.

WHERE IS DUQUESA?

La Duquesa is located on the western coast of the Costa del Sol within the Malaga Province, and just a few kilometres away Cadiz Province. It is the quieter end of the Costa del Sol with development in the area not truly growing until the late 90´s, – early 2000´s. And then of course the recession hit and development stopped. Once it started again around 5 years ago, lessons had been learned and the area remains low rise and green & fairly quiet. We have a close community with full time residents of mixed culutures and tend be a commuter town for Gibraltar workers.

Our nearest big town is Estepona with a population of around 76,000, a bustling Spanish town with a beautiful traditional town centre filled with boutiques, restaurants and cafes. To the west of La Duquesa is Sotogrande, with a beautiful Marina and bags of sporting activities to be had. La Duquesa itself has a beautiful Marina, one of the prettiest on the coast, it´s neighbour is Sabinillas, a very Spanish coastal town and where most amenities are found, banks, supermarkets and the Health Centre. We have Manilva, the white pueblo just a few mintues from the coast and Castillos, is the Roman hamlet, snuggled on the coast and a few minutes stroll along the promenade from Duquesa Port.
